Mikeb
Article intéressant Balogun, John-Jules, Cottrell and Lopez: meet the next generation of Arsenal stars Par James McNicholas Il y a 4h 8 When Sven Mislintat left Arsenal, supporters mourned the loss of their ‘diamond eye’. However, fans concerned about how their club will spot the talent of the future should console themselves with this: they’ve still got Alan Knowles. Knowles is not a well-known name among Arsenal fans. However, it serves him well to remain out of the spotlight. His role at the club might be unheralded but it remains of vital importance: Knowles is an academy scout, part of a network of talent-spotters scouring youth football for players with the potential to play for Arsenal. Having served Arsenal for more than a decade, Knowles has brought a number of gifted players to the Hale End academy’s attention — including current first-team squad member Reiss Nelson. “A scout at Arsenal, Alan Knowles, helped me a lot during the early days of my career,” he said while on international duty recently with England under-21s. “I was always told to keep playing with a smile on my face, and give 100 per cent, which is what I try to do now. I’ll always appreciate the support and encouragement.” Along with the likes of Bukayo Saka and Joe Willock, Nelson is part of an exciting generation of academy talent who are starting to make their presence felt in the first team. However, the production line does not end there. Behind the Class of 2019, another batch of young Gunners are waiting in the wings for their opportunity. At the front of the queue is another Knowles spot: the 18-year old goalscoring sensation Folarin Balogun. This Friday night, Arsenal Under-23s will face Tottenham with their attack spearheaded by 18-year old Balogun. However, it could have been so different: as a schoolboy, Balogun had a trial period with Tottenham. At the time, the 10-year-old Balogun was setting tongues wagging with his goalscoring exploits for his Sunday league team on Wanstead Flats in east London. He had already spent time at Tottenham’s academy when Knowles and Arsenal moved in. He spent six weeks on trial at Hale End before his mind was made up: Balogun’s family informed Spurs he would be joining the red half of north London. Born in New York City to Nigerian parents, Balogun has made Arsenal his home. He was the star of the title-winning under-18 side last year, scoring 25 goals in just 19 appearances. That remarkable tally included two hat-tricks, as well as a four-goal haul against Reading. No player of his age was more prolific in English youth football. That blistering form earned him a promotion to Arsenal’s under-23s, where he has hit the ground running: his first appearance of the season brought him another hat-trick against Blackburn Rovers. Nelson has already publicly dubbed Balogun “a younger Eddie Nketiah” and, like Nketiah before him, every time Balogun has stepped up a level he’s responded in the same fashion: by scoring goals. Balogun is a man in demand. He has been called up to both the England and USA Under-18s, and is on the radar of the Nigerian Football Federation. “I know most of the Arsenal players and this is a very talented player to have in any team,” Nigeria’s under-20 head coach Paul Aigbogun said earlier this year. In February, Balogun signed his first professional contract with Arsenal. As part of the under-23 squad, he’s now based at London Colney in the same complex as Nelson, Saka et al. Already this season, Balogun has been invited over to join Unai Emery’s senior squad on several occasions. Arsenal’s transition team of Steve Bould and Freddie Ljungberg have helped a number of young players make in-roads to the senior set-up, with the likes of James Olayinka, 19, Tolaji Bola, 20, and teenage goalkeeper Karl Hein, 17, all stepping up to join first-team training as required. Interestingly, it is not Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang that Balogun immediately cites as his idol, nor Alexandre Lacazette. Instead, he models his game on the Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani. Balogun admires the Paris Saint-Germain forward’s perpetual movement. “Edinson Cavani is the player I look up to for his runs in behind,” Balogun told Arsenal’s match-day programme last year. “I also look to Robert Lewandowski for his finishing and I go out to training early to work on my own, which will hopefully make everything sharper and more instinctive.” Balogun’s performances in training did enough to earn him a place on the bench for Arsenal’s 5-0 Carabao Cup victory over Nottingham Forest but he didn’t get onto the pitch. With another cup tie on the agenda this week at Anfield, he’ll be hoping he can go one better and make his professional debut. Arsenal are improving when it comes to carving out development paths for academy players. It has been a learning process and there have been one or two casualties along the way. A notable example would be attacking midfielder Xavier Amaechi, who this summer chose to leave the club and move to Hamburg in the Bundesliga 2. Amaechi, who grew up close to Arsenal’s London Colney training ground, was another player discovered by Alan Knowles. He watched a 12-year-old Amaechi’s performances at Fulham for a full year before persuading him to make the move north. For Amaechi, raised in a family of Arsenal fans, it was a straightforward decision. The left-footed midfielder was one of the most gifted players in his year group, but grew disillusioned about his prospects of first-team football in London. In July, he joined Hamburg for an initial £2.25 million. Internally, Arsenal insist the deal represented a success for the academy — especially with negotiated add-ons and a healthy sell-on clause in the back end. However, there was also disappointment at losing an exciting talent. Arsenal will be determined to avoid that scenario again. Within a fortnight of Amaechi’s departure, the club had tied down Tyreece John-Jules, who shares an agent with Amaechi, to a long-term contract. John-Jules had been a regular with the under-23s throughout 2018-19, and made headlines when he scored in a friendly for the senior team against against Al Nasr in Dubai in March. That buzz only increased this autumn, when he scored a magnificent back-heeled volley for the under-23s against Everton. Arsenal Academy ✔@ArsenalAcademy A backheel volley at the Emirates? Standard 19.6K 10:59 PM - Aug 23, 2019 Twitter Ads info and privacy 3,739 people are talking about this John-Jules is another player cherry-picked from another London club, making the switch from Charlton aged eight. A centre-forward who is comfortable operating on the flanks, he’s even briefly played in midfield. “TJ has always been a very good football player and we’re trying to use him a little bit more in play,” Ljungberg said last season. “He comes a little bit deeper and he’s becoming more involved in the game. We’re using his strengths and he gets the goals as well, so it’s really good.” As well as working with Ljungberg, John-Jules is one those Arsenal academy players who were briefly coached by Thierry Henry during his time with the under-18s. “He only took us for two sessions,” admits the young striker. “He taught me about movement and timing, and obviously gave me tips on finishing when we did striker drills.” It’s a sprinkling of stardust on a nascent career. At one stage, John-Jules lived in north-west London digs alongside Nketiah. He’ll be determined to follow his former housemate to the fringes of the first-team — and hopefully beyond. For now, he is still waiting for a competitive debut. He was set to be named in the match-day squad for the Forest game, but was cruelly ruled out after feeling an injury to his hamstring the day before the game. Scans later revealed a tear, and he’s still waiting to make his return. With the Liverpool game likely to come too soon, his focus will be on the under-23s. “I feel playing against older men in this league has definitely been good for my development,” John-Jules has said. “Hopefully, I improve even more at this level which might create a path to the first team.” After the success of Jadon Sancho in Germany, Arsenal’s under-23 games have become a regular haunt for a number of European scouts. The latest starlet to attract attention from the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Marseille is 17-year-old midfield Ben Cottrell. The Stade Velodrome would be a far cry from Parkfield FC, where Cottrell was first spotted playing in Hatch End, Harrow. Parkfield have produced talent like Jason Roberts (Wigan), Darren Ward (Millwall), Elliot Ward (West Ham) — even boxer Audley Harrison and Mark Ramprakash, the Middlesex, Surrey and England cricketer, were once on their books. At under-nine level, Cottrell suffered the familiar left-footed fate of being shunted to left-back. However, it quickly became clear Cottrell was a natural creator, and he has blossomed into a promising attacking midfielder. As a broad-shouldered, left-footed No 10, the comparisons with Jack Wilshere are inevitable. In Balogun and John-Jules, Arsenal have produced a pair of proficient finishers. Cottrell is the player currently charged with providing them with ammunition. Cottrell, centre, celebrates scoring against Tottenham under-18s in April (Photo: David Price/Arsenal FC via Getty Images) Another left-footer making a positive impression is Joel Lopez. The teenage full-back is latest in a succession of players to have swapped Barcelona for Hertfordshire, following in the footsteps of Cesc Fabregas, Fran Merida, Jon Toral and Hector Bellerin. Arsenal’s homegrown talent has, for some time, been supplemented by acquisitions from abroad. Lopez joined as a scholar in the summer of 2018 before signing professional terms a year later. Raul Sanllehi’s contacts in Catalunya helped push the deal through and Lopez’s decision to leave La Masia was informed by Barcelona prioritising the development of Juan Miranda, currently on loan with Schalke. He felt at Arsenal, his progress would be swifter and smoother. So far, he appears to have been right. The club’s decision to sell Dominic Thompson to Brentford — where he joined another former Arsenal left-back, Josh Dasilva — was made in part with Lopez’s development in mind. At the moment, Bola is the de facto left-back for Steve Bould’s under-23 side but, despite being three years younger, Lopez is already breathing down his neck. The decision to name him in Arsenal’s A-List squad for the Europa League was seen as a significant commendation of his work. At a time when Arsenal’s present is distressingly turbulent, the academy conveyor belt continues to produce exciting new blood. As long as they have a talent-spotter like Knowles in their ranks, hope springs eternal that the future may be brighter.
